How I finally nailed the art of taking care of myself

How I finally nailed the art of taking care of myself

I learned to be the being in charge of my own well-being.

At home, I listen to high-vibrational music during my showers, transforming the bathroom into my own karaoke stage.

Growing up, I was enchanted by the sight of beautifully manicured nails. It was a luxury that seemed like a distant dream.

I had my first manicure for my matric dance. I chose the classic French nail design. The experience was transformative, making me feel incredibly beautiful.

Inspired, I attempted to master the art of doing nails myself. I offered my services to family and friends, but my skills were far from professional. My career as a nail artist was short-lived.

It wasn’t until 2016, just days before a life-changing job interview, that I met Ludwe Sigabi, a gifted nail artist who has been a pillar of support through my life’s highs and lows.

Initially working at a beauty spa franchise in Melville, Johannesburg, she started her own salon at her home in Sophiatown.

I have remained a dedicated customer. My sessions with Ludwe have become a cherished ritual, a time to share my fears and joys, laugh, cry, and learn about spirituality and self-care.

It has been a privilege to witness Ludwe’s growth over the years. Her skills, affordability, and gentle approach set her apart from other nail technicians.

Each appointment feels like a fresh start, allowing me to confront life’s challenges with a renewed spirit. The warm, welcoming atmosphere of Ludwe’s home enhances the experience.

I’ve recommended Ludwe’s services to close friends and family, including my mother and sister, who eagerly schedule appointments whenever they are in town.

In addition to my regular appointments with Ludwe, I’ve incorporated other self-care activities into my routine. Living a demanding lifestyle, I’ve committed to getting a massage at least once a quarter.

I find discounts for spa treatments and massage packages through advertising platforms, making these luxuries affordable. The treatments leave me feeling relaxed and ready to tackle life’s challenges.

At home, I listen to high-vibrational music during my showers, transforming the bathroom into my own karaoke stage. Soaking in a hot Epsom salt bath also works wonders for my body after a long day.

I’ve started meditating to centre myself and balance my energy. Taking a quiet moment away from life’s hustle and bustle is crucial for compartmentalising my thoughts and refocusing my attention.

These self-care activities have profoundly impacted my mental and overall health. They’ve helped me find my flow, allowing me to balance myself amidst life’s chaos.

In an often overwhelming world, dedicating time to self-care has been my anchor, grounding me and enhancing my well-being.
