Exercise 1: Treat yourself like a friend

1. Think about a friend who’s feeling down on themselves for something.

What to do: In your change journal, make some notes about how you’d respond:

  • What would you say to them?

  • What would you do for them?

  • What would your tone be?

2. Now think about when you tripped up in your change journey.

What to do: In your change journal, make some notes about how you’d respond:

  • What did you say to yourself?

  • How did you feel about yourself?

3. Is there a difference between how you’d respond to a friend and how you responded to yourself?

What to do: If so, write down why you treat yourself differently to others.

4. How might things change if you treated yourself the same way you’d treat a friend?

What to do: In your change journal, make some notes about how you’d respond:

  • If you treated yourself like a friend, what would you do and say?

  • How might you feel?
